That's Your Best Advice?!

I was listening to a Podcast where some Big Whig in the project management world, with years of experience, was asked what to do when you are on a project that is doomed to fail. His answer: I don’t know. You could almost hear the smug smile from the wise old man who sounded amused at the prospect of young bucks getting knocked down a notch.

He did say that that it was indeed a problem. Here’s my paraphrase of his thoughts: Once a project starts smelling like it might fail, suddenly everyone on it wants to be as far away as possible. No one wants their name associated with a sinking ship. Lessons Learned go out the window, reports drop off, and everyone is suddenly “too busy” on other emergencies to return calls. On a bad project there is no such thing as an orderly closure. You are simply out of luck.

You can hear him smile some more.

Anybody got a funny sinking-ship tale?
